Christmas Winter Breaks & Festive Days Out

Winter is a season of festive sparkle, and at Stoke by Nayland Resort, it’s the perfect time to slow down, reconnect, and embrace everything the season has to offer.

Nestled in the heart of the Dedham Vale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the landscape transforms into a winter wonderland of rolling fields, misty mornings and timeless charm. Visitors can enjoy wintry walks, cycling routes, and nearby picturesque villages, museums, heritage sites, and historic castles, offering the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

Spend a morning out in the crisp winter air, while our spa offers a warm sanctuary after a day of exploring. Whether you’re travelling alone, planning a romantic couple’s break, bringing the whole family, or organising a festive getaway, there is so much to explore.

We round up some of our top picks for the season.

Enjoy a Magical Day Out at Colchester Zoo

Open every day from 9.30am, spend a day at Colchester Zoo. Moving from private ownership to a charity, every visit can help in the ongoing development of the zoo, alongside helping towards vital conservation programmes worldwide. Caring about the world’s threatened species, it looks to raise awareness among local people in community conservation programmes and research.

Discover playful chimpanzees and curious otters to majestic elephants, lemurs, tigers, leopards, penguins, giant pandas, and even crocodiles. Don’t miss the chance to hand-feed gentle giraffes, or colourful lorikeets! Little ones can explore Jungle Tumble soft play, while young adventurers can head to the outdoor adventure areas (or beeline straight for the face painting station!) There are plenty of food options too, for even the fussiest of eaters.

Throughout November and December, kids can meet Santa and enjoy a delicious treat from Mrs Claus, and they can find out more about the Elf Workshop and how Amur Leopard toys are created. Visitors can also enjoy a range of festive activities, such as the Enchanted Trail of Light, where you can stop off at refreshment zones and indulge in a hot chocolate, hearty Christmas dinner wraps, mulled wine and more.

Unwind at Peake Spa

At Stoke by Nayland Resort, our Spa becomes a true winter sanctuary, particularly as the days grow colder and the festive season begins. After the busyness of the year, take time for yourself, share a peaceful retreat with your loved ones with a spa break, or enjoy a little indulgence that leaves you feeling restored and renewed.

Unwind with a tension-releasing massage, hydrating facial, or pampering manicure and pedicure. Dip into the gentle warmth of our 18-metre heated pool, relax in the sauna, or sink into the bubbling jacuzzi and aromatic steam room and awaken your senses.

The contrast of the crisp winter air and comforting heat will help to ease fatigue and melt away that seasonal stress in the run-up to Christmas.

Between treatments, curl up in our cosy relaxation spaces with a spiced herbal tea or, for something truly festive, treat yourself to a winter-inspired afternoon tea brimming with seasonal delights. Surrounded by the stunning frosty landscape, you’ll find the perfect place to recharge, reset, and embrace the magic of the season during a spa day with us.

A Winter Wonderland at Kentwell Hall

Step into Kentwell Hall, an enchanting 16th-century red brick manor house surrounded by acres of gardens and parkland. With its charming moat and half-timbered service building dating back to the 15th century, Kentwell offers a glimpse into centuries of history, from 18th-century lawns and yew trees to the Phillips family’s loving restoration in more recent years.

At the working farm, meet Kentwell’s rare-breed animals, from horses and cows to pigs, sheep, and miniature Shetland ponies.

The gardens are equally captivating. From the espaliered fruit trees of the Walled Garden to the stately Lime Avenue and sweeping lawns, the grounds are alive with history. Ancient cedars, acers, and the Sunken Garden bring character, showcasing beauty in every season.

From November through December, the grounds are set to be transformed into a winter wonderland for the Enchanting Gardens Lit by Night event. Wander along the 50-minute illuminated trail, where towering trees glow against the night sky and every corner reveals a dazzling display of colour and light.

Bring family and friends, wrap up warm, and enjoy an evening filled with festive sparkle at one of Suffolk’s most beautiful historic estates.
