  • About Us

Stoke by Nayland Resort are part of a family-owned enterprise, called The Boxford Group, which began life as a 120-acre apple farm in the 1930s.  The hotel originated as the Stoke by Nayland Golf Club nearly 50 years ago, which was created by Bill and Devora Peake as a diversification from their fruit growing and arable farming businesses.

Bill and Devora created the two championship golf courses – the Gainsborough and Constable – at Stoke by Nayland with a modest clubhouse in the early 1970s. With conservation a priority, they planted 60,000 trees on the courses that also feature picturesque lakes and are noted for their extraordinary tranquillity. After the courses were built, the area became part of the Dedham Vale designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Since 1999 the next generation of the Peake family has substantially expanded the original Golf Club with two championship courses on 300 acres into a thriving resort to include an AA 4-star 80-bedroom hotel, five luxurious country lodges, the two AA Rosette Lakes Restaurant, an extensive conference and banqueting facility for up to 450 guests, a state-of-the-art Spa and Fitness centre, two-story clubhouse bar and restaurant, Golf Shop and Pippin Gift Shop. There is also a covered driving range, extensive short practice area, pool table, squash and coarse fishing on site.

Five luxurious self-catered Apple Tree Lodges were completed in 2012 and were built on land that Bill and Devora purchased from the War Agricultural Department in 1950, which had been the site of a Women’s Land Army Hostel in World War II.  Initially, the hostel was adapted and used to house the farm’s pigs, turkeys and chickens.  After that, it became derelict for around 40 years until planning permission was granted for the company to build 15 eco-friendly lodges and a function room which are managed by the hotel business. The original water tower has been restored and houses a tribute to the wonderful work of the Women’s Land Army, whilst also providing an impressive panoramic viewing area.  These eco-friendly lodges are very popular for romantic breaks, family and friends’ gatherings, golf and spa breaks, wellbeing retreats and even corporate strategy breaks.

The Peake family was selected by the BBC and Sir John Harvey Jones to feature in his three TV “Troubleshooter” documentaries in the 1990s, with their Copella Fruit Juice business (sold to Tropicana UK in 1997), fruit growing, packing and storage enterprise, and golf club.

Devora Peake was awarded an MBE for Services to the Fruit and Fruit Juice Industries. Bill died in 1979 and Devora in 1999, but the next generation has continued to own and run the businesses.

Susanna Rendall is the Group Managing Director, and her brother Jonathan Loshak and sisters Tamara Unwin and Carmella Meyer, as well as her son Robert, are all executive board directors.  Stoke by Nayland Resort, Boxford Farms and Peake Fruit employ up to 450 staff between them, of which 170 are employed in the hotel.

The golf courses regularly host worldwide-televised international golf events such as the PGA European Senior and Challenge Tours. The excellent golf, fitness and hotel facilities also led former World No 1 Lee Westwood to select Stoke by Nayland to be the home of one of only two residential Lee Westwood Golf Schools in the country.

Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa won the national 2016 VisitEngland “Business Tourism Venue” Silver Award for Excellence, and the 2015 “Best Hotel” category in the county Tourism and Hospitality Awards.  The Hotel is now almost completely self-sustainable, using power generated from the company’s own anaerobic digester and woodchip Bio-Mass boilers.  This has resulted in the Hotel winning both the 2016 “Sustainable Tourism” category in the Suffolk Greenest County Awards and the “Best Green Enterprise” BALE Award in 2015.
