The 'Stokers'

Started in 1973 by Peter Grieves the Stokers are one of the Stoke by Nayland Societies.  The Stokers can about when Peter asked a few of his playing friends of his plan to form a society within the Stoke by Nayland Club.

The inauguration meeting was held on Tuesday October 30th 1973, 18 people attended and it was agreed that they be called "original members" and that the society be known as The Stokers Golfing Society.
Members agreed that as the society was Peter Grieves idea he should become the Chairman, and was later voted to become President. Mike Shoesmith was Secretary, Ken Richardson Treasurer.

It was also agreed that "Stoke Up" be adopted as the official toast to the society and the aim was

"The enjoyment of golf and social contact and comradeship between members"

It was further agreed that maximum membership should be 24. Yearly Program would be four away venues and four at home, two of these would be Guest Meetings, that program and original rules are still the same today.
