The History behind Pippin
The origins of the “Pippin” brand name for the Peake family goes back 40 years. It was first used as a component of the Copella apple juice brand in 1969 and the family then took ownership of a vegetarian wholefood restaurant, French Bistro and wholefood shop in Hampstead High Street in 1976 which at the time was the largest vegetarian in London. They named the restaurant Pippin, after the apple variety, and it was launched at a celebration party by Monty Python’s Graham Chapman.
Other regular clientele included Eurythmics singers Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, comedians Peter Cook and June Whitfield, and actor Alan Bates. Pippin was famous for serving delicious freshly made savoury delights, unusual salads, desserts, bread and cakes. Upstairs the French-style Bistro was open in the evenings and delighted customers with its great live music.
The Pippin Shop today
As the last four decades have seen so many contrasts and changes, so has the Pippin name. It is now thriving in the form of Pippin Shop at Stoke by Nayland Hotel where it offers an Aladdin’s Cave of hand made gifts, jewellery and toys, top quality foods and wines, seasonal cards and decorations, and a myriad of delightfully quirky items. It also stocks the largest range of ladies’ designer golf and leisurewear in the region.
“Pick your own” Hampers and Boxes are a speciality of the shop. They are exquisitely wrapped and packed on site and make fabulous gifts at any time of year. In season Pippin also sells all the delicious fresh fruits which are still grown on the family farm surrounding the hotel - apples, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries.
If, like most of us, you dread heading into town to do your shopping, you will find the relaxed Pippin experience a breath of fresh air – especially with free parking! As an added bonus, you can enjoy a free cup of freshly-brewed tea or coffee for two by the fire in the Hotel Lounge if you spend over £10. That has to make it worth a visit!
Pippin at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa is open 7 days a week from 8am – 7pm.
